The doxies that are up for adoption primarily come from one of three places.
1 - We get some of our little guys from breeders who surrender the dog for a variety of reasons, but usually they were either rescued by another group, or the breeder was simply done breeding the dog.
2 - We get some from local shelters. Typically the dog has been in the kennel in a strange place with lots of noise and strange people passing by. The doxie may have growled at people who stopped to look and this resulted in the dog being labeled "not adoptable". This is not the shelters fault. They are over run with animals and not all animals do well in a kennel situation. This is especially true of the dachshund breed.
3 - An owner surrenders the dog. There are a variety of reasons why an owner surrenders a dog. Sometimes the dog has been a family member for years and there is now a very young member of the family who has started grabbing at the dog and they are afraid the dog will eventually bite the family member. Typically doxies nip. They rarely bite, However it can be a scarey experience to have a little doxie nip at you.
Please note that dachshunds as a breed can do very well with young children, but we prefer that the youngest member of the family be at least 6 years of age. Younger children do not know how to pick up small dogs and how to carry them etc.
