FOSTER HOMES URGENTLY NEEDED
Thank you for your interest in fostering a rescued dachshund!
The role of the foster family is to provide a caring, temporary home and rehabilitation for a dachshund in need. Foster Homes are the backbone of any non-profit All Volunteer Foster Based animal rescue group.
Providing consistent food, a warm safe place to sleep, kind words, and patient socialization are the standard elements of a good foster home. The Foster Family plays a Vital role in rehabilitating abused, negelected or unsocialized animals. FOSTER HOMES ARE THE KEYSTONE TO SUCCESSFUL ADOPTIONS!
The dachshunds that come into rescue have a variety of backgrounds:
• some are owner surrenders
• some come from shelters around the Midwest
• and others are unwanted by breeders or rescued from puppy mills
The amount of additional care needed by a rescue dog can vary dramatically
from dog to dog:
• Some rescued dachshunds have previously been in a home, and are
partially or fully house-trained. They have been cared for at one point, have
experienced a variety of life situations, and understand the basic human animal
bond. Often they are well-adjusted emotionally and will adapt easily to
a foster family or new home.
• Other rescued dachshunds have come from a situation where they were
not able to establish a bond with a person. They may have been neglected,
and lack social skills or manners. They can have health issues resulting from
neglect, and will require a caring foster family willing to work with them to
help them become a well-adjusted pet for their future family.
• Finally, there are dachshunds that have been rescued from bad
breeding situations, hoarders, or puppy mills. Often these dogs are never
let out of their hutch or cage their entire lives. They do not know what
walking in the grass is, or how to behave around people or in a house. They
have received little or no veterinary care, have health issues, and are
extremely fearful or shy. These dogs need a patient, loving foster family to
help them learn how to be a dog, and discover the new world around them.
With the help of a loving foster family, we have seen that all types of
dogs can blossom and become treasured, forever companions to their new
families. The length of time dogs remain in foster families also varies. We do
everything we can to spread the word that our rescue dachshunds are
available. Some are in foster care for a few weeks, and some for a few
months or longer. Some are even adopted by their foster families!
As a DDR Foster Family, you will work with an assigned Foster
Coordinator. They are a valuable resource, working along side you during the
fostering experience. They are available to answer questions, arrange for any
medical care necessary, assist in training or behavioral issues, etc. Best of all,
they often foster rescue dogs themselves, so they have a first-hand knowledge of the process.
All medical expenses or medications will be provided by Dakota Dachshund Rescue and our participating veterinarians.*
Your rescue dog will be examined by a veterinarian, receive vaccinations, and be spayed or neutered before they come to your home.
*Please contact us should your foster dog need medical attention so that we
can arrange an appointment with one of our veterinarians. Of course, if it
is an emergency, please contact us on the way to the nearest clinic.

Can't foster but still want to help!
There are other ways you can help our rescue!
● Donate
Dakota Dachshund Rescue is a private, all volunteer, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
We are not affiliated with any national organization, so you can be assured 100% of your donations go directly to the medical and daily care of the dachshunds in our rescue.
In addition to monetary donations, we also need and accept donations of items that will directly and indirectly benefit the lives of the dogs we are trying to find homes for*. Your contribution, no matter how small, makes a difference in the lives of these pets.
● Sponsor
Almost every dachshund that comes into our rescue needs to be spayed or neutered and updated on their shots. We will not adopt out a dog that has not been spayed or neutered. Also, almost every dog needs dental work as well.
Once the medical attention is complete the dachshund is placed in a foster home, and the stay in foster care can last anywhere from 2 to 6 months or longer in some cases. Of course while in foster care there is the expense of food, a toy or two, a bed, and sometimes ongoing treatment.
It is rare that the rescue recoups the costs associated with finding our dogs a home.
Sponsorship means that you have selected a dachshund that touches you in some way. You would like to adopt them but for some reason cannot. A donation of $25.00 means that the costs of care for one month are being donated by you.
In the dog’s description on the website your name would appear as the sponsor. You do not have to sponsor the dachshund until he or she is adopted. How many months of sponsorship are up to you. If you would like to sponsor one of our dachshunds please email us or give us a call. Be sure to let us know which dachshund stole your heart. We also respect your privacy if requested.
Occasionally some of our rescues are un-adoptable and essentially become forever fosters. This is particularly true for the senior dogs.
This can put an undue burden on some of our Foster Families and DDR itself. These dogs usually require ongoing medication and vetting. Please, consider sponsorship to help offset these ongoing costs.
● Fundraising Volunteers
DDR relies on donations to help raise money for vet care. We need help in soliciting donations from vendors for events and raffles. This involves sending a letter requesting a donation and calling vendors to ask for a donation. We are always looking for new fund raising ideas so that we are able to help more dachshunds in need.
● Events Volunteers
Help plan and/or staff special events designed to raise money for DDR and/or increase visibility of our rescue. Periodically we hold 'Meet and Greets' where the public can meet the dachshunds we have available for adoption and talk to our volunteers and foster parents.
We need help distributing event flyers, setting up booths, handing out information, talking with the public about adoption and possibly fostering or volunteering for DDR.
In 2008, we had a booth at Rally to Rescue at Petsmart and the Luverne Hot Dog Days. We also had booths at the Stampede game in Feb. and Germanfest in Sept. which included the very popular 'wiener dog races'.
We need volunteers to help sell t-shirts and raffle tickets and help with entry forms for the dachshund races.
● Transportation Volunteers
Dogs frequently need to be shuttled to/from vet appointments and to foster homes. We routinely need help in transporting rescued dogs or owner surrender dogs from locations throughout the Midwest back to Sioux Falls.
We also need help in transporting dogs to their new owners once they are adopted.
Do you travel any particular route frequently? Does your job have you traveling to the same area and back? If so, and you would like to help save dogs in need of rescue, please contact us!
● Rescue Volunteers
The Volunteer Coordinator keeps a list of volunteers who are interested in assisting with rescue operations. Those who are able to offer their assistance with loading, transporting, and unloading.
When we assist with large rescues from puppy mills, hoarders or backyard breeders we also need help with bathing/grooming and documenting each dog with a picture and overall physical evaluation report before their first vet check.
● Dog Walking/Socializing
We have a temporary location for our puppy mill rescue dogs until we are able to get them into foster homes. We need volunteers on the weekends to walk, play with and generally socialize the dogs and to learn more about their personalities.
