Rainbow Bridge

THE RAINBOW BRIDGE

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.  The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together . . .

Hercules

Hercules wasn't a dachshund but he was the guardian of the dachshunds. When we brought Joey, our first foster dachshund, home he was in horrible shape and he found great comfort in being by Hercules' side. When Hercules died suddenly we knew we had to do something in his honor, that's how DDR came about . We loved our lab and our dachshunds and Hercules shared his bed, his bowl, his home with any dachshund that came through our door. Our big red dog now wanders the 100 acre woods across the Rainbow Bridge. I know he waits there for us so we can garden, chase rabbits and play as we used to. He'll someday be the keeper of the dachshunds again.I miss my big red dog!

Joey
Joey was our very first foster for the Humane Society, before DDR ever was a thought. Joey was so afraid of people, when you approached him he was splay out on all four legs as close to the ground as he could for fear you would hurt him. It took a very long time, lots of love and another outgoing dachshund named Phoebe and a great lab named Hercules to help Joey learn to trust and then love us. Joey taught us the true meaning of unconditional love. Rest in peace my little friend, chase the rabbits with Hercules, keep Grandpa Dick company while you wait for me at the Rainbow Bridge.

Peanut
Our story starts with running into Diane at German fest in 2009. She had been part of Emma's medical journey starting as a baby. We made the decision to start becoming involved with DDR as a foster family. Mr.Peanut came to the rescue as a 2-year-old dapple pup. He was blind in 1 eye and couldn't see very well out of the other. Every time we had a meet and greet Peanut and Terry would suddenly not be around. Terry would make excuses for it. Then one day he said that no one would adopt a blind dog. Then on September 11, 2010 our kids won the duck pond scholarship and Peanut became part of our family on our wedding anniversary. He was supposed to be Terry's dog but that was not in the cards. He was Colter's dog from the start. Peanut did not leave "his boy's" side . He would sit with him, sleep with him, he was Colter's shadow. He always tolerated all the foster dogs that have come thru our house in those 15 years. When Colter moved away it was tough but as soon as he would come in the house to visit Peanut knew. Colter took his Senior pictures with Peanut because that is always how it should be. Colter really wanted Peanut to meet Mack, his Golden retriever puppy and luckily, we were able to do that for a few months. It was the hardest decision we have ever had to make in May 2025 but Peanut was close to 17 years old and his quality of life was not good. Much to our surprise Colter was with him as he crossed over the Rainbow bridge. We miss him every day and loved him more than words could ever express. Terry, Hope, Emma and Colter Bader

Charlie
Charlie (originally known as Diesel) passed away on Nov. 14, 2025. Charlie was deeply loved and we are so grateful he lived to be 16 years old! In his younger years, he loved to go for walks, car rides and racing in the Wiener Dog Races (winning several times!). His eyes would tell you everything! As he grew older, his pace got slower and we had to carry him more. Our love for him never wavered. He lived a long, happy and spoiled life. We’ll see you on the other side someday, Charlie.

Blossom
have lost my sweet baby girl, Blossom. (Formerly Patsy) When I got her over 6 years ago, she hid in the corner for months. With time, love and patience she blossomed into the best dog ever for me. We had such a bond! I was her human and she was my baby girl. In February she started having breathing problems. Long story short, the doctors couldn't figure out what was causing it. It turned out to be that she was allergic to my new leather couch. I got rid of the couch and she improved. Then she got sick again. This time it was a bowel obstruction. She had surgery on Labor Day and passed away on Saturday September 6th. My heart is broken and physically hurts. It was not on my radar that she might not make it. Love your doxies well...you just don't know how long you will have them. Thank you DDR for bringing her into my life! It just wasn't long enough.
