Animal Success Stories

"My little dog---a heartbeat at my feet."  Edith Wharton

Our lives will forever be enriched because of the dachsies that touched our hearts in rescue, but we know the real healing does not begin until they leave our care.  We encourage, we celebrate, we do everything we can to give them the skills they need to put their best paw forward as they wait for their forever families to find them . . . and then the time comes to say goodbye.

Often we shed tears.  We remember when they came in, how far they’ve come, the hiccups along the way – we laugh, we cry – and then we always say a little prayer as we send them on their way.  We hope they find the confidence to keep that best paw forward, because we know, when they do, they will truly flourish.  It is then, they will heal; it is then, they will find peace.

If you have adopted one of our adorable dachsies, and would like to contribute a Success Story, please e-mail dakotadachshund@hotmail.com, and we will add it to the website.  Be sure to send us a current picture.  We do love pictures!!!

Betsy
Betsy

Betsy came to live with us in July 2008 on trial and has been here ever since. She is an absolute joy!!! We've nicknamed her Little Bear because her soft hair pretty much sticks straight out and she's so fluffy. She's trimmed down a little more and weighs in around 20 pounds now. She was 10 years old when we got her and had lived in a nursing home in another state with her previous owner. She had been forced to leave because of policy changes at the home and ended up in rescue in Sioux Falls. We already had a 6 year old wonderful female rescue doxy, Daisy, who needed a companion. After our 14 year old precious little male died, Daisy had just crashed with grief and we feared losing her also. Time and lots of love and extra attention brought her around and it was finally time to find her (and us) another pal. My heart went out to Betsy after reading her story and seeing her picture. Daisy and I went to see her and brought her home. The two are so good together. They love their walks, the grandkids, kohlrabi and carrots from the garden, going for rides, and don't ever let me forget the nightly Greenie.... My husband says they have trained me well but he is absolutely bonkers over both of them. We are blessed to have found Betsy to add to our home.
