Argus Leader Article -- Sunday September 13th, 2009
Unlikely coupling of arts, Dachshund races a hit
Peter Harriman pharrima@ar~usleader. corn
With the Sidewalk Arts Festival enlivening the south end of downtown Saturday and the peppery band music from German Fest firing up northern Phillips Avenue, the city resembled a midweek rush hour for most of the afternoon.
Organizers of both events appreciated the synergy as the traditional end-of-summer celebrations shared the day for a change.
"I think it makes sense. Two events for downtown Sioux Falls is perfect," said Michele Wellman, spokeswoman for the Washington Pavilion that sponsors the arts festival.
"So far, we've been very, very happy with the marriage," added Dale Schmidt, vice president of the Sister Cities Association that put on the 15th annual German Fest. The only obvious shortcoming was there were fewer available picnic tables he said, since the supply had to be shared with the Arts Festival
.
As the Arts Festival was winding down and German Fest was cranking up late Saturday afternoon, Sioux Falls police reported no problems with traffic movement. One Arts Festival participant, Deb Meiers of Sioux Falls, probably spoke for many when she acknowledged she would probably be double-dipping."I might. I'm kind of curious to see what that is all about," Meiers said of German Fest.
For the second year, it was partly about Dachshunds.
Diane Wade of Dakota Dachshund Rescue said the wiener dog races that were a highlight of German Fest "have just been a godsend to us." They drew attention to the pens of rescue dogs ranging from pups to an elderly canine citizen of 14. After the races last year, some rescue dogs were adopted and others found foster homes, and Wade expected a similar result this year.
None of the rescue Dachshunds competed, but the locally owned critters who raced displayed the breed's zest for life and the crowd's enthusiasm to see it.
Schmidt said one or two heats of weiner dog races last year expanded to more than two hours of racing Saturday. "They've really taken off," he said.
Sharon Palmer of Sioux Falls attended her fifth Arts Festival. She was on the trail of a large birdhouse she'd seen earlier at the Brookings Arts Festival.
"I wasn't in a position to carry it home then. Now I am," she said, and she hoped the exhibitor would be appearing in Sioux Falls.
"Let the hunt begin."
Blake Reimnitz was among Lincoln High School German Club members painting children's faces at German Fest. He was distinctive in his Patriots football jersey. The Lincoln junior was making his initial visit to German Fest. Later in the evening, he anticipated playing defensive line for the Patriots in the Dakota Bowl against O'Gorman High for the first time.
